Know your dog. Better.

It all started with village dogs. Did you know that most of the dogs in the world are not descended from modern breeds? The majority of dogs in the world are a unique kind of dog, called village dogs.

Village dogs are free-ranging, free-breeding dogs whose ancestors were indigenous to a geographic area. To learn more about these special dogs, our founders spent years traveling the world and swabbing dogs in remote areas of Europe, Asia, and South America, along with a Cornell University-led research team. Through this work they discovered the origins of the dog in Central Asia, and also identified genetic regions involved in domestication and local adaptation. At Embark, we're proud to be the only dog DNA test that can identify village dogs, with the largest village dog reference panel of any canine genetics company.

Village dogs are important because they help us understand topics like where dogs came from, the history of domestic dogs, and how dogs and humans learned to live together. They were crucial to the rise of the modern breeds–and to the founding of Embark!

So, while a village dog does not have ancestry from modern breeds, their ancestors may have contributed to the founding of today’s dog breeds. Although they’re not recognized by kennel clubs as a breed, they are genetically identifiable, with many different village dog populations around the world. When we identify a dog as a village dog, it’s not because we can’t figure out what breeds are in the dog. Each type of village dog has a unique genetic signature that we can use to identify village dog ancestry.

What is a Supermutt? At Embark, we take pride in transparency. If a percentage of your dog’s breed mix doesn’t match any breeds in our database, or if it’s too small a percentage for us to be sure that it’s accurate, we’ll tell you. Other dog DNA tests may show other breeds in your dog’s results to make up that small percentage – breeds that may or may not actually be present.

“Supermutt” refers to a portion of ancestry that is from significantly far back in a dog’s family tree and therefore cannot be as confidently identified as more recently inherited breeds. Our ancestry algorithm works by finding identical segments of DNA between your dog and the purebred dogs in our reference dataset. These long identical stretches of DNA are more likely to reflect recent ancestry, whereas shorter segments reflect more distant ancestry.

Many dogs descend from other dogs that were themselves mixed breed. The further in the past, your dog has purebred ancestors, the smaller the identical DNA segments match our reference dataset are. In some cases, the best matches to our reference dataset are so small (reflecting very distant ancestry) that they can no longer be as confidently assigned to any one particular breed. Instead these are assigned to the “Supermutt” percentage. Within the “Supermutt” result, we provide insight into which breeds are most likely to be distant ancestors.

Why breed results can be surprising. Sometimes looks can be deceiving! And your dog’s breeds may not obviously match their appearance. While it’s fun to guess which breeds might make up your dog, visual breed identification is notoriously unreliable—studies have shown that visual breed ID is wrong over 80% of the time!. Less than 1% of a dog’s 20,000 genes impact appearance. There is so much variation among dogs in general that visual or behavioral ID is generally an unreliable way to diagnose a dog’s ancestry.

Even in single-breed dogs, it is ultimately several genetic trait results (and not necessarily their breed) that are responsible for appearance. While breeders tend to strive for consistency in several of these traits to match a breed standard, this in no way precludes the possibility of a surprising outcome in a single-breed puppy. Additionally, dogs with a single-breed result can sometimes have a very small percentage of DNA (about 1-5%) that represents a separate breed. These very small proportions are typically undetectable by a DNA test, but can yield some surprising looks in an otherwise single-breed dog.

    super detailed!

We adopted a dog from a rescue organization, and trying to figure out her breed mix was driving me nuts. We were told she was potentially a german shepherd mix, but we guessed she had some snow dog and maybe akita mixed in. The swab process was simple, straightforward, and we were given lots of updates along the way (which I very much appreciated!) The included postage was enough to send the swab back from BC to the US. Her breed mix was akita, german shepherd, malamute, husky, golden retriever, and 'super mutt.'

I ended up upgrading the report to include health reports to see if there were any genetic predispositions to illness (our previous rescue dog was a purebred husky and was quite ill). We found out she's genetically healthy, and the report also broke down her likely colouring, adult weight, muscling, and appetite. I'm a bit of a genetics nerd, so I found this all quite fascinating! The test isn't cheap, but I think it's great info for anyone wanting to know more about their dog. I found the results to be quite accurate – the predicted weight, muscle, and colouring were almost 100% accurate. We also found out potential close 'relatives' with others that have done breed testing on their dogs.

There was also an option to send a condensed version of the report to our vet. I'm not sure if it will be of much use to them, but at the very least it rules out any genetic causes of illness in the future. Overall, I would definitely recommend this test for anyone that wants more info on their dog. If I had a purebred dog, I'd be more likely just to order a test for genetic health issues – but for our 'rescue mix,' this was fantastic!

The test was easy to do. The prepaid shipping label was nice. Results didn't take too long.

MOST ACCURATE DOG DNA TEST AND COMES WITH RELATIVE FINDER - YOU GET MATCHED TO YOUR DOGS FAMILY!

I wanted to test our 6 year old rescue for a while but kept going back and forth on which DNA company to use. I had seen other people's results with Wisdom Panel and their disappointment when they had information on known parentage (the mother of the dog) and the results showed questionable breeds while totally missing identification of known breeds.

I wasn't happy that the price of Embark is higher but you are paying for accuracy and other great features like being matched with actual relatives. Yes that's right. You will find various degrees of relatives who are very much related to your beloved pet. I love that!

Testing is simple. You just swab your dogs mouth, register the kit and send it in. Processing took less than two weeks for us but they explain it could take longer during busier times, like right after Christmas, etc.

I knew our dog was rescued from a California shelter. We assumed she was mainly Chihuahua. We were a bit shocked by her results when they came back but her various breeds totally explain her unique little personality. We were matched with other relatives of hers. She has second cousin matches located in various parts of California and a few other matches in various parts of the United States. Interestingly enough a lot of the out of state matches adopted their dogs from California. I have no doubt about the accuracy of these tests. We ended up testing both our dogs but I paid for the breed and health on the younger dog. I think both kits are great but I appreciated all the health screenings in the breed and health so I ended up upgrading my dogs kit that was done with breed only. If you purchase this cheaper kit and wait it out, Embark sends you a half off code to process their health portion. It currently screens for 181 health issues. I ended up paying less than fifty dollars to upgrade the cheaper kit.

When we frequent the dog park, people ask us what breeds are dogs are. Instead of just randomly guessing we tell them we had them Embarked and before long we have others wanting to get their dog tested.

If you are trying to decide between this brand and another brand then stop looking. This is the company you want to use. Their database is huge and they are a reliable company. Its easy to upgrade to health so you don't have to commit to the more expensive one initially.

    Third time buying this

I have always been curious about the breeds of my fur babies. This is the 3rd time I purchased this kit. I feel it is very accurate. The firts dog I tested has a flipped curled tail. Although she was marked like a shepard and I was told she was a shepherd mix, I wasn't so sure. The test confirmed she has Akita and Chow (both curly tailed dogs) and the rest was a mix. I felt this was accurate. She always had an attitude like the Chows and Akita's. The 2nd test I did was for a dog that we were told was a hound mix as she always talks to you and her fur is like rabbit fur, so soft. Hers came back half lab and a good bit of Husky (which would explain the soft fur and the eyes she has and the way she howls and talks to you. The 3rd test we did we had a rescue that was a German Shepard. He looks fullblood but who knows. The test came back 100% German Shepherd. Embark has no information on my dogs except their name and I think it ask if male or female but not sure about that. I feel these test are very accurate and wish I would have tested my others that have already passed. I will test all future dogs. Its fun to find out their genetic background. Its easy to do as the dogs must like the flavor on the stick with cotton on the end. You just rub it in their mouths along the sides of their gums and send off for testing. Very Happy

Easy, accurate, informative, and kinda fun

I purchased this about 50% off on Black Friday because I adopted a mixed-breed and was curious to know his genetic makeup. It is pretty simple and the instructions are easy to follow. There is also a link to video that demonstrates the process. You basically have to stick a swab in your dogs inner cheek for about a minute and twist/wiggle it around to make sure you capture a sufficient quantity of doggy DNA. Then you just drop it in the provided storage capsule, which has some kind of preservative liquid in it, shake it a few times, and then drop it in the mail (USPS) using the prepaid label provided.

Just because I was curious about the accuracy, I did not provide any information about my dog during the registration process. About two weeks after the sample was received, I got a notification that my results were ready. Obviously, I can only guess how accurate it is based on my dog's appearance, but it seems accurate to me. The results include a family tree that goes back 3-4 generations, depending on your dog's mix. It also includes information about those breeds, which I found to be informative and accurate. However, it is possible I am falling for the "horoscope effect" in that I am simply finding truth in generalized statements, but it really seems accurate to me.

One note of caution: if your have a heavily mixed breed (generations upon generations of mixed breeding), then you may find that most or all of your dog is a "super mutt" which is Embark's term for having so much of a mix that it can't be determined. This isn't Embark's fault since it is simply a limitation of the technology and the specific dog, but this risk does exist, so just be warned that this is a possibility. I don't see any reason to reduce a star because it is clearly disclosed by Embark.

Ultimately, it was fun learning a little more about my dog's heritage. People also seem to like guessing when they meet my dog, so it has turned into a little game as well.

I did not do the optional health screening upgrade, since I'm trusting my vet to handle my dogs health. Also, I believe it would only tell you the health conditions that your dog is more susceptible to since it is based on DNA, and not a blood sample.

Easy to use, the wait is the worse part but each step was relayed and the wait was not as long as we expected.

    Product and customer service

I was so impressed with the customer service I received. I received the kit on time and carried out the swab and sent it off. Unfortunately, my swab got stuck enroute and I reached out to Embark who helped me track it and they reached a decision to resend a kit at no cost. Kit arrived in no time and I sent it off. Embark informs you when the swab has arrived, swab extracted, etc. So at every stage you are notified which helps build up the excitement. I won't spoil the rest however the results were very interesting and what surprised me most was the accuracy and rhe detailed breakdown. They also share information of close relatives and the picture of my dog's sibling was a spitting image of her. Forgot to say the only information I provided was my dog's name and swab as I purposely did not share pics or her breed type so it was amazing that through science I was provided with mind blowing results. I definitely recommend this product.

So fun and surprisingly detailed results

This was my second time purchasing this product. It was really easy to use and the instructions were clear. Collecting the sample was quick, and I got updates along the way while waiting for the results. The breakdown of breeds was super detailed and included traits and health insights, which was really interesting to learn about. It was fun, informative, and totally worth it if you’re curious about your dog’s background.

    My dog is a what..........?

I adopted my dog from a rescue shelter in 2020 with their guess that she was a mixed bassett breed dog, but I haven't been able to afford to get her tested without the help of amazon gift cards, don't judge me these tests are EXPENSIVE, so I ordered a DNA breed test kit and got a sample from my little girl, which is harder than it sounds when I didn't desensitize her to having her muzzle area handled. I like that the test came as a 'swab' test which is uninvasive to other body cavities , and just a minor discomfort for my dog, again not used to having her muzzle area handled, when swabbing her cheek pouches to gather enough DNA to get the test done. I also like that the results take a realatively short time, 2-4 weeks instead of 2-4 MONTHS. I'm definitely looking forward to finally finding out what breed mix my little rescue is!!

    Accurate and Descriptive

I am so glad we had our precious 14 year-old dog tested before she passed away a few months later. I had wanted to do the test for a long time, and my friend recommended Embark because they are pretty thorough. It was very easy, and the turn around was only 2-3 weeks during the summer. They sent me emails keeping me updated during the process.

We were surprised by the results, because as my brother said, "she was half Australian Cattle Dog masquerading as a Black Lab." She was 100% black until she got pretty old and looked like a small lab, but with different ears and a mottled tongue. She was adopted at 1.5 years, so we had no idea of her history. We knew she wasn't purebred Labrador, but being half Australian Cattle Dog was a surprise! It does explain some of her stubbornness.

We had our other dog tested as well, and the results are a surprise but definitely accurate. I actually just purchased the breed + health test for our new puppy.

This is a good value and it's easy and reliable. I'm glad it's available. Highly recommend!

    Embark DNA for your dog

Worth the $ to see your dogs makeup..I have two small rescues and it was informational and funny to see what is in there.. worth it, easy to do, just a little swab in their mouth..

    Both are Corgis!

We have two rescue pups. We got the tricolor first and the red a year later. Everyone kept telling us the red was a mutt (we didn’t care). We met a couple at a corgi gathering with one who looked very similar to our red and told us they used this test and learned he was 100% Pembroke Welsh Corgi so we ordered the test.

It was easy to do and results came back quickly – she is also 100% Pembroke.

I’m ordering again for our tri. Clearly she’s Pembroke (both came from Honey Brook puppy mills) but our red was a breading mommy and we were delighted to be able to see dozens of relatives in her results! Now we want to see if the tri comes back related.

The Wolfie factor is particularly interesting. Red is very Wolfie and we would agree. Tri is a sweetie pie and my guess would be less Wolfie.

    A bit pricey

Mailed my dog’s swab out on July 24th and received the results on August 12th. Found out he has a bit of a mix of another breed (90% schnauzer, 10% cocker spaniel). We always suspected he was a bit of a mix and it’s nice to find out what exactly that was. I dinged a star because the breed breakdown and potential dog relatives are literally the only information they give you without having to pay more money. Come on, this is an expensive kit, give us more freebies! You can unlock more info by paying more. Ugh.
As for the kit itself – Typical easy to use DNA swab kit. I say easy, but that depends on your dog’s willingness to let you swab their mouth. I did a gum swab and it worked fine – my dog refused to let me access his cheek. They have a nice web app and send email updates on when their lab receives the sample, and the progress of the analysis.

    Easy to use, accurate results

I bought this to include in a basket of dog goodies for a tricky tray. I’ve used embark on two of my dogs and the results seemed to be accurate. I’ve bought the one with the health testing as well and found it to be of no use- none of my dogs serious issues were mentioned. This particular kit was for me perfect because it gave me exactly what I wanted: breed analysis and connecting to relatives. It connected me to two full siblings for one of my dogs. I was able to determine his age after finding these two relatives. The age test offered by embark was also a disappointment for me as the results were too broad to determine an exact age – it gave a broad range, something like +/- 2 years.

    Fast

I absolutely love the Embark DNA testing for dogs. The process was quick and efficient, and the results came back faster than I expected. It answered so many questions I’d been wanting to know about my dog, and the information was easy to understand. I’m so glad I did this and would highly recommend it to any dog owner.
