How to potty train a dog with a bell (quick answer)

  1. Hang the bell on the door you use for potty trips, at the height of your dog’s nose.
  2. Ring it every time you go out. Touch the bell (or guide your dog’s nose or paw to it) right before you open the door, so the sound always comes before going outside.
  3. Reward the ring. When your dog touches the bell on its own, praise it, open the door straight away and head to the potty spot.
  4. Keep it for potty only. If the bell starts meaning “playtime”, take your dog to the potty spot calmly and come back in if nothing happens.

Most dogs need daily practice before they ring on their own. Full step-by-step guide: how to teach your dog to use potty bells.

Common questions

Do potty bells really work for dogs?

For many dogs, yes. A bell gives your dog a clear way to ask to go out, as long as it only ever rings before potty trips and you answer it every time. Puppies usually pick it up faster when they get a reward right after ringing.

Are bells on cat collars safe?

Most cats get used to a small bell. Choose a breakaway collar that opens if it catches on something, and leave room for two fingers under the strap. If your cat seems stressed by the sound, take the bell off. More in are bell collars bad for cats?
