I like the tone and the distance (lost one on a ...I've bought three DD685 bells, I like the tone and the distance (lost one on a collar, one finally pulled apart). Most dog bells of similar construction share a weakness, and that is the way that the clapper is fastened to the loop – the clapper is crimped with a "C" shaped piece of metal that sticks out of the top of the bell. When your dog runs through heavy cover over a couple of years, that "C" eventually opens enough and the clapper is pulled off with the bell, leaving the leather loop still attached to the dog's collar. We hunt in some mean bush…
At the start of each season, just check that the "C" is still closed. If it isn't, squeeze the ends back together.
I will be buying another DD685 to have as a backup. Luckily my third DD685 will be here tomorrow, so all is good.
UPDATE 4 NOV 2016 – Unhappy face. I lost another DD685 bell, and I understand a bit more about the failure mode.
There are TWO failure points in the manufacture of similarly constructed bells. First is the link holding the clapper as described above. The second failure point is the two "ears" stab crimped on either side of the link inside the bell. When the bell is pulled away from the collar, the first part to resist are these two small tabs crimped over the ends of the slot in the bell that allows the link to enter inside it.
When these little ears are bent enough, the bell now is only restrained by the link that holds the clapper. Any pressure downward on the bell is now solely focused on the top of the clapper, and thereby the link. To sum it up, if the ears are still holding the bell firmly, then it is worth your time to sqeeze the link together. If the ears have let go, and the bell is resting on top of the clapper, then any pull on the bell is directly transmitted to opening the link.

Company stands behind their products!Although the bell itself is good quality, the leather strap didn't hold. I went through 3 different bells in 5 minutes each. I contacted the company and not only did they replace the bells, but they also put stitching on the leather straps to prevent this from happening. Great company and amazing customer service!!

Perfect Dog BellThis brass bell on a leather loop works perfectly on my dog. It is well made and looks like it will last a long time (if the dog does not lose it!).
