This is perfect for seed bells!

I've been feeding birds and wildlife for over 30 years, and have always kept seed bells out for my birds. They used to come in a small cheesecloth-like bag that you could use as a holder when you put them out, but many years ago they switched to the plastic packaging, leaving only the seed bell to hang without anything to hold it together.

It wouldn't take long before the birds (and squirrels) broke the seed bell apart, then it would fall to the ground and larger wildlife would haul the whole thing away. I've tried everything, tying the bells with twine, putting them in dishes (tied down so they couldn't be knocked over or stolen by an animal), and finally just giving up; I just stopped putting the seed bells out.

When I saw this holder, I quickly ordered it, and was very pleasantly surprised when it arrived. It is very solidly made, and the cage is very strong. The bottom opens up (it has a very strong snap-type closure), and it's simple to insert the bell into the cage and close it back up. As the birds ate the seed, the bell slowly disappeared, and any pieces that broke off stayed within the cage until they were eaten. I actually got to enjoy watching the birds for quite some time before they finished all of the seed.

I only had one very minor problem, and it's something that most people probably wouldn't have to worry about. I live in a rural area and I feed all kinds of wildlife. I went out one day and found the cage bottom just hanging open, and what had been left of the seed bell I had in there at the time was gone. I believe either one of our raccoons or possums came around, hung from the bottom of the cage, and they were heavy enough to pull the bottom open. It would not have been a squirrel, as the closure is secure enough that a squirrel's weight would not have been enough to pull it open. Like I said, most people probably don't feed raccoons and possums, so they wouldn't have to worry about this happening. I solved the problem by using a plastic coated wire twist-tie to secure the bottom.

If you enjoy putting out seed bells for your birds but have the same problem I did with the bells being broken apart, this is the perfect solution for you.

    FANTASTIC BIRDSEED BELL PROTECTOR!!

I just happened to see this while buying birdseed bells for the backyard birds. It is pricey but I bought one because our squirrels always take the ENTIRE BELL & run away stealing it. They have cost so much in last $5-$9 bells I figured it was worth it.
I hung a new bell in it right by the older bell that had birds choosing it over sunflower seed, sunflower hearts, Niger, mixed birdseed premium mix, white millet for the Painted Bunting pair residing here all year & even corn cobs on the tree for the squirrels. The squirrels seemed to like the birdseed bells over any other food. The birds flew in & 4 of them promptly hopped onto the wire of the cage & ate without squabbling for the 1st time ever! On the uncaged bell they squabbled over each others part of the bell! The cage gave them a wire to grasp & eat without any interference from each other.
Now I’m going to order several more cages so I can safely feed bells on the other 5 bird feeder set ups! Really great value as I’ve lost 5 bells just this YEAR(since 1/1/24) & at $6 to $9 each that can add up real fast! Sorry Mr/Mrs Squirrel-no more birdseed bells for you!

    works perfectly!

This has been in use in my yard for a couple of months now and it works perfectly. I have had the problem of the seed bells falling off the little plastic sticks. This is a simple, inexpensive way to keep that from happening. The birds can easily reach the seed, even when the seed bell gets pretty small…the openings are big enough for birds to reach in and I haven't had any problems with birds getting stuck or trapped. I would buy it again.

    Sturdy

It’s very sturdy. I was hanging the seed bell without a cage but the squirrels would knock it down before it was only half eaten. With the cage the squirrels can’t knock it down so it lasts much longer. I also use a bread tie on the bottom to reinforce the latch. I’ve been using the cage for about 2 weeks and so far the squirrels haven’t been able to get it opened. I would definitely recommend this product.

    Not squirrel proof

purchased to deter squirrels from our feeders. Wife secures the bottoms wit double zip ties and the squirrel chews through the ties and gets. the bell out. Not really anything wrong with the feed bell. Just smart squirrels.

    Surprisingly nice

Quite strong. Very sturdy. The birds in my backyard love it so much they fight for their turn on it. Highly reccomend.

Much easier than the old style!

The cage on this product comes attached to a hanger making it much easier to use compared to the old style, where the hanging chain had to be hooked to the seed bell once it was installed in the cage.

    Birds love it!

This is a good product, my birds love it, well constructed and stays fastened tight.
Received as a gift, and bought another one I liked it so well.
Have a little Downey woodpecker that usually visits daily, and loves it as well.
Anyone looking for this type of feeder, I would highly recommend.
